Flexion Distraction Technique is used in our office usually to try and help low back pain with disc involvement or sciatica.  It is a specialized protocol that stretches the spine and discs to help increase movement and take pressure off the affected areas.

What is Flexion Distraction Technique?

Flexion Distraction was developed by Dr. James M. Cox.  The idea is to utilize small amounts of flexion coupled with distraction to help take pressure off of the discs.  This can be very effective for those suffering from herniated or bulging discs as well as sciatica.

How Does Flexion Distraction Technique Work?

At our office, the patient lies face down on the table and their feet are then strapped in using velcro to add additional traction.  I then flex the table (the low back bends at the waist) towards the floor while putting pressure on the lower back with my hand.  To patient tolerance, I can add additional flexion toward the floor as well as motion to either side.  This helps to stretch the muscles as well as open the disc space in the lumbar spine.  The thing I like most is that I control the movements while feeling the spine.  Again everything is done to what you can handle.  Like everything else we do in our office, communication is key.

By taking the pressure off the discs and joints the goal is to decrease the nerve pressure.  Nerves are the parts that transmit pain from the body to the brain.  By trying to get the spine properly aligned (with adjustments and other techniques) it can result in decreased pain.  Another side effect can be a reduction or elimination of numbness, tingling, or burning.

Am I a Candidate for Flexion Distraction?

Just like with all of our patients we perform a history, consultation, and exam to find out if you are a good candidate for our care.  We are a wellness and maintenance based office so we don’t accept all cases.  If we deem you a good fit then we may use Flexion Distraction on you.  Again every case is different and not all techniques are needed.  This is why we customize a treatment plan that will work best for your problems.
