Summer is here and with it brings so many exciting outdoor activities, but it’s important to look after yourself in the heat!  Read below for some sun safety tips.

Protection from UV Rays

Sunscreen

Soaking up the sun can be good for you, but moderation is key!  Sun safety starts with your skin!

Apply sunscreen if you know you’re going to be in the sun for a significant period of time is extremely important. A sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher is recommended to avoid burns, especially early in the season. When shopping for sunscreen, we recommend seeking out brands with more natural ingredients.  Many popular brands are filled with harsh chemicals that can have other negative effects on the skin.

Remember to reapply your sunscreen every two hours (especially if you’ve been swimming) is also important.

Attire

If you’re going to be outdoors, loose, light-colored clothing will help keep you cool and redirect sun away from you. It’s also a good idea to take steps to protect your eyes. A good pair of sunglasses can guard your eyes against damaging rays, so be sure to look for UV Protection when you shop.

Beat the Heat

Stay Hydrated

Despite how sick you may be of hearing it, the importance of hydration cannot be overstated, especially in extreme heat. Make sure to balance drinking enough water with any other beverages (especially adult beverages)! This will help your body keep your temperature under control and ensure you can enjoy this summer to the fullest!

Sun Exposure

Even if you’re properly slathered in sunscreen, being in direct sunlight for too long can still have a negative impact on your body temperature. To avoid becoming overheated, make sure to take breaks indoors or in shady areas so your body doesn’t become overwhelmed. Being in the sun is great and has its advantages (go Vitamin D) it can also be very harmful.  So be mindful of the tips above.  For even more sun safety tips on how to beat the heat CLICK HERE!
