Chiropractic Rather than Drugs for Low Back Pain

The American College of Physicians (ACP) stated in the Annals of Internal Medicine, an evidence-based clinical practice guideline, that noninvasive treatments are recommended including chiropractic rather than drugs, for certain types of lower back pain.

Chiropractic Rather than Drugs – What Does It Mean?

This means that approaches like spinal manipulation (chiropractic adjustments), massage therapy, and other more natural and alternative options may be better than drug therapy.  The study focused on different types of pain.  This included three types of pain: acute pain (lasting less than four weeks), subacute pain (lasting four to twelve weeks) and chronic pain (lasting greater than 12 weeks).

The main takeaway, according to Nitin S. Damle, MD, MS, MACP, president of the ACP says, “Physicians should avoid prescribing unnecessary tests and costly and potentially harmful drugs, especially narcotics, for these patients.”

This has always been a philosophy of mine as a chiropractor.  It is better to start off with the least invasive therapies and work your way up if needed.  As a society, we tend to go for the quickest, cheapest, or easiest fix.  This doesn’t always mean it is right.

“Physicians should consider opioids as a last option for treatment and only in patients who have failed other therapies, as they are associated with substantial harms, including the risk of addiction or accidental overdose,” said Dr. Damle.
