Inflammation is a necessary initial step of the healing process. However, long term inflammation can create havoc throughout the body. Inflammation can result from physical stress on the body, chronic emotional stress or certain foods (especially sugar or saturated fats). Chronic inflammation could potentially result in conditions like fibromyalgia or a variety of autoimmune diseases. It is important for our overall health to keep inflammation reduced as much as possible.  Below are a few great options to get the process started.

Ice

Ice is a fantastic topical anti-inflammatory option. It’s inexpensive and easily accessible. Ice causes vasoconstriction (closing down of the blood vessels) which aids in pumping out edema and swelling. Injuries especially respond well to ice therapy. Dr. Villelo from our Frisco office does a great job of discussing the benefits of ice for an injury here. He has also provided proper instructions for using ice here.

Boswellia

It should first be mentioned that there are 16 known types of Boswellia, however, Boswellia Serrata is the one most used for its medicinal properties. Not only is Boswellia serrata a pain killer, but it is rich in benefits like reducing inflammation and helping decrease morning stiffness in conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and even inflammatory bowel disease. Another amazing benefit of Boswellia Serrata is that it helps prevent cartilage loss which can play a large role in mobility of the joints as well as pain. Boswellia Serrata also has antibacterial, antifungal, anticarcinogenic and antineoplastic properties. Some medications may interact negatively with Boswellia so make sure to clear it with your doctor before adding it into your regimen.

Magnesium

Up to 80% of the population is deficient in magnesium. An increase in the body’s magnesium intake could decrease the body’s inflammatory response. A study published by Dr. A. Mazur on inflammation and pain management notes “Magnesium deficiency induces a systematic stress” and “contributes to an exaggerated response to immune stress and oxidative stress is the consequences of the inflammatory response.” We recommend magnesium on a regular basis at our office. Magnesium intake can be improved through oral supplements, applying topically with magnesium oil or cream, or soaking in epsom salt baths regularly. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a strong anti-inflammatory so it can help decrease pain associated with an inflammatory condition, such as the multiple types of Arthritis. It also prevents lactic acid buildup in the muscles, which not only keeps energy high but also decreases soreness and achiness in the muscles.

Castor Oil

This is one of our favorite recommendations currently for reducing inflammation in the body. Castor oil contains a compound known as ricinoleic acid which is what offers so many great benefits. Castor oil helps to reduce swelling and inflammation, it also has been shown to relax nerves, dissolve adhesions, remove toxins and increase circulation of the blood and lymphatic systems.
